About the Artist

I enjoyed looking at alot of Hawaiian shirts when researching for this print. It was inspiring to see how many different aspects of beach life are depicted on these shirts. I thought a New Zealand version would feature the distinctive ti or cabbage trees instead of palm trees. Often the surf is hard to reach on some of our New Zealand beaches, so I wanted to show a surfer making his journey to catch a wave. There is also a nod to the home of Kaleo Designs with the landmark hole in the rock (Motukokako island).

I was fortunate enough to discover my love of drawing and painting at art class in high school and felt drawn to pursue an artistic career. I moved from the family farm where I was raised to Auckland to study graphic design at Auckland Institute of Technology. My first creative jobs were in home decor, painting ceramics for several Auckland tableware companies. I loved seeing how a decorative design could sell a product. In 2014, after about a decade in the graphic design field, I got re-acquainted with the field of surface pattern design and since then have had some wonderful opportunities to develop my work in this direction. I love going for walks in nature and my patterns often get inspired by what I discover there. I observe and photograph plants that catch my eye, and if possible collect specimens to draw back in my studio.

Please ensure your delivery address is entered correctly. If no one is available at the delivery address, the courier may leave the parcel in a safe place at their discretion. Kaleo Designs is not liable for delays, loss, damage, or parcels delivered to an incorrectly supplied address.

Returns & Exchanges:

If you are not completely happy with your purchase, items may be returned in new, unworn condition with original tags attached within 30 days of purchase for an exchange or refund to the original payment method.

Exchanges are permitted one time only per order/item. For customers within New Zealand, the exchange will be re-sent at no additional shipping cost. Any further exchange requests will be at the cost of the customer. Please check availability of exchanged product prior to returning product to us, or call us.

Refunds will be issued less any original shipping costs incurred by Kaleo Designs in sending your order, plus a $15 processing fee.
