In Māori mythology the Pīwakawaka is a messenger. My grandmother always said that they were the spirits of our ancestors coming to visit. We live in a house with lots of Pohutukawa trees and love seeing the fantails fluttering around and following us through the garden- this always brings me comfort. I was inspired in this print to try to capture the cute and cheeky nature of our native fantail, amidst a backdrop of our native blossoms.
