KŌWHAI

The artwork aspires to mimic the delicate drop of the flowers, the gracefulness with which the branches flow together, and the geometric circular leaves synonymous with the Kōwhai.

Maree is an artist, designer and illustrator, living locally in beautiful Kerikeri. She has a passion for painting native flora and fauna. Maree particularly enjoys painting vibrant and intricate flowers and plant life. Maree has created artwork, illustrations, graphic designs and surface pattern designs for a number of companies, with designs featured on a wide range of products from clothing and textiles, stationary, signage, office supplies, books, adhesives and even glass jewellery. "I was always painting and drawing from a young age, and when I got a bit older, taking photos of everything around me. I saw the beauty in rusty tractors, lone desolate trees, and crumbling old barns. These are the everyday things that inspire me to keep creating. I love to portray the beauty of the otherwise mundane and show people how vibrant, colourful and textured the world around us really is."

Kōwhai is an iconic flower, easily recognisable by its shape and vibrant yellow colouring. It is unofficially New Zealand's native flower and as such I wanted to pay homage to the quintessential kiwi flora. The artwork aspires to mimic the delicate drop of the flowers, the gracefulness with which the branches flow together, and the geometric circular leaves synonymous with the Kōwhai. The Kōwhai tree is sturdy with deep roots and soft flowers, symbolising strength, resilience, renewal and hope.
