GOLDEN VOLUTE SHELL PRINT by artist Jill Creighton

GOLDEN VOLUTE SHELL PRINT by artist Jill Creighton

The golden volute is an elegant and rare deepwater sea snail endemic to New Zealand. It’s shell is much longer than it is wide, of a light orange, sometimes white colour and often a very long spike at the end. I wanted to create a bold New Zealand print that played with the shape of this shell. Placing the shell a certain way has created a wave throughout the negative space of the pattern. The pattern has been hand-drawn and then digitally traced, using positive and reversed out motifs.

Hi there, I’m Jill – a graphic designer, surface pattern designer and artist based in Kerikeri, Bay of Islands. With my graphic design work, I work with businesses and organisations throughout New Zealand on branding, advertising and publications. With my surface pattern and art, I love creating very bold geometric shapes full of colour.

In my spare time, I also run a side business called Oko State where I design and make bags and accessories out of canvas, upcycled and handpainted fabrics.

My husband and I have three busy teenagers and we live on a small farm with our cows, sheep, goats and a Flemish Giant rabbit called Gucci.
